By switching to LED lights in six parking facilities, Arizona State University expects to save $127,000 a year in electricity and maintenance costs.
The retrofit of the six facilities is part of ASU's Phase II energy conservation and sustainability project. In the parking structures, ASU contracted with APS Energy Services to replace more than 2,000, 150 W metal halide fixtures with Lighting Science's 78 W LED low bay luminaires.
Replacing the existing metal halide fixtures and lamps should help ASU reduce energy consumption by 1.5 million kilowatt hours, helping reduce emissions about equal to those emitted by 208 cars annually.
The new lights should last about 50,000 hours, or three times as long as the ones they are replacing, according to a press release.
Last year, ASU announced its intention to build a 2 megawatt solar generating project.
