An energy standard for datacenters has been published by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
ANSI/ASHRAE 90.4-2016, “Energy Standard for Data Centers,” establishes, according to the organization, minimum energy efficiency requirements of datacenter design and construction. It also helps set standards for the operational planning and maintenance and utilization of onsite and offsite renewable energy sources for datacenters.
The standard is performance-based and deals with mechanical load and electrical loss (MLC and ELC). Those calculations are compared to the maximum allowable values in the standard based on climate zone, the press release says. There is the possibility of tradeoffs between MLC and ELC that can lead to compliance.
This spring, the organization released ASHRAE 1651, The “Development of Maximum Technically Achievable Energy Targets for Commercial Buildings: Ultra-Low Energy Use Building Set.”
