Carbon emissions resulting from the production, distribution, use and recycling of the newly released Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have decreased by 14 to 16 percent compared last year's models, NDTV Gadgets reports.
The bulk of the savings comes from changes in the purchasing and manufacturing of the aluminum used in the iPhone shell. Apple has cut carbon emissions tied to the production of the aluminum shells by 50 percent compared to last year. The company favors using aluminum produced with hydroelectric power.
In its 2015 Environmental Responsibility Report, the company noted that while its overall GHG emissions have increased, emissions associated with making and using its products decreased 7 percent from 2013 to 2014.
In an effort to reduce its overall carbon footprint, the company powers all of its US data centers, offices and stores with renewable energy. Only 13 percent of Apple’s worldwide operations are powered by fossil fuel. The company has pledged to reduce that percentage to zero.
