Anaerobic Digester Project Starts on Long Island, NY

biogas-energy-manageNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of an anaerobic digester facility in the Long Island town of Yaphank.

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that leads to the release of biogas. The new center will be operated by American Organic Energy at Long Island Compost’s 62-acre facility. It will process more than twice as much food waste than is currently processed at any private facility of the same type that accepts offsite food waste in the state, according to the governor’s office.

The project will be completed next August. It will accept about 120,000 tons of food waste, 30,000 tons of fats, oils and greases and 10,000 tons of grass clips from the region annually. The expectation is that it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 40,000 tons annually, which is the equivalent of taking 8,125 cars off the road.

Biogas will be produced in Chicago as well. Nissen Energi Teknik, a Danish supplier of combined heat and power units (CHPs) for wastewater treatment plants, has gotten an order from Glenbard Wastewater Authority. The Chicago firm will connect the CHPs to digesters at the treatment plant and generate power and heat from biogas, according to Water Online.
