Alcoa, the world's leading producer of aluminum, continues to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of its global aluminum production processes, the company announced.
Using their 1990 emissions as a baseline, Alcoa's Strategic Framework for Sustainability outlined the goal of achieving a 25% reduction in global GHG emissions by 2010. They reached that goal seven years ahead of schedule in 2003, and just announced that in 2008 they are at a total reduction level of 36%. This represents a 3% reduction over 2007 levels.
EL covered the new aluminum recycling facility the company built in 2008 to facilitate their goal of raising aluminum can recycling rates in North America from 52 percent to 75 percent by 2015. That goal was subsequently adopted by the Aluminum Association.
