Adidas to Use Plastic Waste in Products

adidas group logoThe adidas Group has partnered with the Parley for the Oceans initiative to develop materials from ocean plastic waste that will then be used in its products beginning in 2016.

The company also announced that it will phase out the use of plastic bags in its retail stores.

The partnership program will include communication and education, research and innovation and direct actions against ocean plastic pollution.

The partnership announcement coincided with the publication of the adidas Group Sustainability Progress Report 2014. Some of the highlights from the report include:

  • Total CO2 emissions at adidas administration offices, owned production sites and distribution centers decreased 27 percent from 2013 to 2014. The company’s 2015 target is a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions.
  • In 2014, the adidas Group sourced more than 30 percent of all its cotton as Better Cotton, exceeding its 25 percent target. The adidas Group has committed to sourcing 100 percent of it cotton across all product categories in all its brands sustainably by 2018.
  • The company phased out the use of long-chain perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and is well on its way toward reaching its goal of being 99 percent PFC-free by the end of 2017. Ninety percent of adidas products are currently PFC-free.
  • The adidas Central Distribution Center in Rieste, Germany, became the company’s 13th ISO 14001 certified site.
  • Adidas used 12 percent less water in 2014 than it did in 2013.
