Some 60 percent of carpet brand Desso's new floor tile range is to be made with a 100 percent recycled yarn, the company has announced.
A portion of the material used when making Aquafil S.P.A.'s Econyl yarn is post-consumer waste from Desso’s own plant.
In 2008, the company committed to using 100 percent "cradle to cradle" design by 2020. The cradle to cradle concept sees carpet as being made up of nutrients, that should consistently remain in use in what Desso calls "an unending metabolism." In 2010 the company launched EcoBase, a carpet tile backing that Desso can completely recycle and use to make new products.
Flooring firm Shaw Industries Group released its third annual corporate sustainability report in September. According to the report, the Berkshire Hathaway-owned company lowered both its water intensity and post-industrial waste intensity last year.
The company also increased the amount of carpet it recycled or reclaimed carpet from 89.4 million in 2009 to 121.3 million pounds in 2010.
