International real estate firm Hines announced that in 2008 more than 100 Hines-owned and/or managed office buildings received an Energy Star label. The buildings - totaling over 54 million square feet - represent a significant increase for the company, bringing their total number of Energy Star labeled buildings to 130, totaling 76 million SF.
The Hines' buildings use 37 percent less energy and emit nearly 39 percent less carbon than those operating at the national average. In total, these buildings save more than $103 million in energy costs annually, and reduce carbon emissions equivalent to those generated in a year by 100,000 homes.
The number of commercial buildings and manufacturing plants to earn the Energy Star for superior energy efficiency rose by more than 25 percent in 2007, reducing over 25 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. Those figures are likely to be even higher for 2008.
