Porsche has announced two hybrid car models with the 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid ready to roll as the automakers' first production hybrid, reports the Wall Street Journal. The hybrid features a combined gas-electric output of 380 hp, an eight-speed transmission, 0-60 mph acceleration of 6.1 seconds and the capacity to free-wheel at speeds up to 97 mph.
Because it's a full-hybrid architecture, the Cayenne S Hybrid can run in all-electric mode, called E-power, up to 37 mph for short distances, and although the EPA cycle fuel economy numbers aren't finalized, it's estimated about 23/26 mpg for city/highway, according to the article.
The Cayenne is available in four models: the Cayenne ($46,700) and Cayenne S Hybrid ($67,700) both with V6 gas engines and the Cayenne S ($63,700) and Cayenne Turbo ($104,800) with 4.8-liter V8 engines, rated at 400 and 500 hp, respectively.
Porsche also says it will move forward with the development of the 918 Spyder, which is a mid-engine, gas-electric, plug-in hybrid with a combined output of around 718 horsepower (500 hp gas and 218 hp electric). There is no production date for the 918.
A successor to the Carrera GT, the 918 Spyder specs include 0-60 mph in about 3 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph as well fuel economy of around 78 mpg, depending on the test cycle, reports the Wall Street Journal. The power pack on board is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery.
