OPEI and PTI Drive High Energy Battery Recycling with Call2Recycle

Posted

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) and the Power Tool Institute (PTI) have joined forces with Call2Recycle, the nation’s largest consumer battery stewardship and collection program, to launch the High Energy Battery Recycling Program. This initiative is designed to facilitate the safe collection and responsible recycling of high-capacity batteries used in outdoor power equipment and power tools.

Addressing a Growing Need

As battery-powered equipment becomes more common, the industry faces the challenge of managing end-of-life batteries, particularly high-energy batteries exceeding 300 watt-hours. These batteries power larger equipment such as lawnmowers, snow blowers, and power tools, requiring proper disposal methods to prevent environmental harm and safety hazards.

The collaboration between OPEI, PTI, and Call2Recycle aims to address these challenges by establishing a network of trained collection sites. Consumers can return used high-energy batteries to participating retailers, where they will be assessed, safely shipped, and processed for recycling. This program enhances safety measures and supports a circular economy by promoting responsible battery disposal.

Industry Leadership in Sustainability

OPEI and PTI play crucial roles in this initiative by leveraging their expertise and industry networks. Their contributions include:

  • Collection Site Expansion – Encouraging retailers to participate in the program, ensuring widespread availability of battery drop-off locations.
  • Safety and Compliance – Implementing best practices for handling and transporting used batteries in accordance with environmental regulations.
  • Consumer Education – Raising awareness among manufacturers, retailers, and end-users about the importance of battery recycling and proper disposal methods.

Manufacturers supporting the initiative include Chervon, Husqvarna, Makita, Stanley Black & Decker, STIHL, Techtronic Industries, and The Toro Company, providing consumers with reliable recycling options for their products.

Similar Battery Recycling Efforts

This initiative aligns with broader trends in the battery recycling industry. Other notable collaborations include:

  • Ascend Elements and Call2Recycle – A partnership focused on EV battery recycling logistics and management.
  • Omega Seiki and Attero – A lithium-ion battery recycling initiative covering markets in Asia and Africa.
  • BMW and Redwood Materials – A program to recycle batteries from BMW’s electric vehicle lineup.

These efforts demonstrate an industry-wide commitment to sustainable battery management, reinforcing the need for structured recycling solutions.
