Sharing details on how the company plans to cut energy use and carbon emissions, Coca-Cola Hellenic says it has embedded carbon emissions control across all operational levels in 28 countries, which has resulted in an energy efficiency improvement of 31 percent since 2002.
At the CSR Europe, Enterprise 2020 Marketplace event in Brussels last week, Coca-Cola Hellenic also detailed how it will cut a further 25 percent reduction in CO2 emissions from its production plants by 2015, and avoid more than 500,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by 2020.
The bottling company says the planned reduction in CO2 emissions will be achieved using new Quad Generation Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology. Developed specifically by Coca-Cola Hellenic with its energy partner ContourGlobal, the energy-efficient process produces electricity, steam, CO2 and chilled water.
Coca-Cola Hellenic and ContourGlobal opened its first advanced energy-saving power plant in Romania as part of an initiative to cut annual CO2 emissions across all of Coca-Cola Hellenic's operations by more than 20 percent.
The company's single biggest reduction in its direct emissions comes from the company's on-site CHP plants and new Quad-Generation technology, said Ulrike Gehmacher, Group Public Affairs Manager, at Coca-Cola Hellenic, at the event.
Gehmacher said the company has committed to 20 CHP systems and when they are all operational, they will cut direct CO2 emissions from production by more than 250,000 tonnes annually, which is a reduction of more than 25 percent from its current emissions.
Coca-Cola Hellenic also discussed another CO2 reduction program to develop new, more energy-efficient coolers for its products. Its latest models eliminate climate warming HFCs altogether and use "Intelligent Energy Management" devices, which cut energy use by up to two-thirds.
"All these measures will avoid more than 500,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year by 2020," said Gehmacher.
Other strategies include using solar (photovoltaic) panels on the bottling plant roofs, optimizing transportation methods, training staff in eco-driving techniques and purchasing energy-efficient vehicles, making Head Office air travel carbon neutral, and introducing Green IT technology and practices.
