Avangrid, comprising New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E), has filed its 2023 Distributed System Implementation Plan (DSIP) with the New York State Public Service Commission. This strategic plan outlines how Avangrid intends to support the state's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), advancing clean energy implementation.
As a sustainable energy company, Avangrid aims to integrate more renewable energy into the grid, electrify transportation and heating sectors, and achieve ambitious clean energy goals that align with the CLCPA.
Avangrid CEO, Pedro Azagra, emphasized the company's essential role in New York's clean energy transition by integrating renewable energy sources and electrifying various sectors. The CLCPA, one of the nation's most ambitious climate laws, mandates a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a 70% electricity production from renewable sources by the same year.
Additionally, it calls for the addition of 10 gigawatts of solar capacity and 9 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035. Avangrid's clean energy objectives include achieving Scopes 1 and 2 carbon neutrality by 2030 and reaching 16.9 GW emissions-free installed capacity by the same year.
The 2023 DSIP presented by NYSEG and RG&E outlines their strategic approach to the energy transition, focusing on essential investments in key areas. These include the deployment of smart meters, enabling real-time energy usage data and automated outage detection for improved customer monitoring and billing accuracy. To address climate impacts on the grid, NYSEG and RG&E are investing in grid automation with remotely operated sensors and reclosers, enhancing grid resiliency and facilitating clean energy integration.
The integration of energy storage plays a crucial role in reducing energy costs and supporting intermittent renewable generation from wind and solar sources. In line with New York's zero-emission vehicle goal, NYSEG and RG&E incentivize EV charger installations and lead by example by adopting EVs in their fleets. Additionally, they support the Clean Heat Program to promote heat pump adoption for reducing building-related emissions, addressing a significant source of emissions in the state.
NYSEG and RG&E's commitment to enhancing data models and real-time monitoring capabilities enables effective analysis and integration of distributed energy resources like wind and solar into the electric grid, adapting to the evolving energy landscape.
