Arch Coal, the second largest U.S. coal producer, has selected Enviance as its enterprise solution to measure and report compliance data for water discharge management. The solution also will help the company enhance its environmental analysis and management, which includes compliance with governmental permits issued under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) and the U.S. Clean Water Act NPDES programs.
One of the reasons Arch Coal selected the Enviance solution is because it will allow the company to centralize and manage its compliance and permitting requirements in one system, which will provide transparent data to help mitigate environmental risks. Another benefit is the solution's scalability that will allow the company to further enhance its environmental management capabilities.
"Given the highly specific environmental requirements imposed on the coal mining industry, we needed a system that could integrate, centralize and measure complex coal-based compliance mandates," said David Hartley, Arch Coal's vice president and chief operating officer.
Arch Coal also selected Enviance because of the company's proven track record in supporting specific coal mining environmental requirements within the industry. The coal producer has leading positions in all three major low-sulfur coal basins, with operations in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. In addition to providing U.S. power generators with coal for electric generation, Arch Coal also ships coal to domestic and international steel manufacturers as well as international power producers.
Other key reasons include low cost of installation, ease of use and seamless integration. It also centralizes data for all users across all facilities for consistent reporting and unified business operations.
Arch Coal also notes several key differentiators that set Enviance's solution apart from other solutions. As an example, Enviance's solution measures 1,600 environmental pressure points that integrate all levels of the supply chain to get to the root of emissions problems.
Enviance also deploys Environmental ERP through a cloud-based delivery model, which is able to analyze greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data with the flexibility to continually adjust as protocols for GHG data collection, calculation and reporting evolve.
The system will be implemented by CH2MHill.
A new study from Verdantix indicates that existing sustainability platforms will likely be replaced by more integrated software solutions, such as Enviance's solution that is based on the concept of Environmental ERP.
