A $100 million recycling and waste-to-energy facility, planned for Grove City, Ohio, has been cancelled after Team Gemini, the company that was supposed to build the facility, failed to pay rent on its leased land next to the landfill.
Team Gemini previously said the 350-acre project would be the “world’s largest” and it would set the stage for the elimination of new landfills in the region by replacing them with a state-of-the-art waste management facility.
The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) has canceled the project with Team Gemini, which had been in the works for three years, The Columbus Dispatch reports. Team Gemini had been late on its rent payments for the previous two years as well.
“There were concerns that were out there about the feasibility of this technology on this size or scale,” Ty Marsh, SWACO’s executive director, told The Columbus Dispatch.
He said low commodity prices — which have hurt recycling companies across the US — played a role and that Team Gemini couldn’t raise the money needed to build the facility.
