The General Motors Company announced that 10 plants have met its goal of reducing energy intensity by 10 percent or more in five years or less. The plants are in Baltimore, MD; Rochester, NY; Spring Hill, TN, Arlington, TX; Changwon, South Korea; Jingiao, China, Tonawanda, NY and Wetzville, MS. Two are in Dongyue, China. The first three achieve the goal for the first time, while the others have done so before.
The announcement was made in conjunction with National Energy Action Month. General Motors said that during its 20 years in the Energy Star program its U.S. facilities have cut $435 million in energy spending and reduced energy intensity by 40 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by 41 percent.
There is a tremendous opportunity to save energy at automobile plants. Earlier this month, BMW said it has signed a 10-year agreement with Bio2Watt to implement biogas electrical generation at a plant in Rosslyn, South Africa. The goal is to create 4.4 MW of electricity.
