Marriott Inks Deal for Energy Management Services at North American Sites

by | Mar 8, 2018

Marriott International has signed a deal with Amerex Energy Services for energy procurement and supply management services of Marriott sites throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Amerex will assist Marriott in managing their complex energy portfolio spanning all deregulated energy markets.

Based in Houston, Amerex is the retail energy consulting division of Amerex Brokers, LLC, which provides over-the-counter wholesale energy brokerage in electricity, natural gas, emission credits and allowances, renewable energy credits and energy data markets.

Marriott and Sustainability

Marriott has long been a proponent of energy sustainability. In 2015, the hotel chain partnered with The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to help it reach its goal of reducing energy and water consumption (on an intensity basis) by 20% throughout its approximately 1,200 managed properties by 2020.

UTSA assistant professor of mechanical engineering Bing Dong developed a proprietary software to capture, model and analyze real-time occupant behavior and energy consumption data. Using these findings, Dong and his graduate student team evaluate Marriott’s current energy systems and processes and recommend a method to capture data from multiple sources into a single database that provides timely and detailed performance feedback through visualization. They have also created a communication strategy to help motivate hotel employees to conserve energy.

And in 2013, JW Marriott Washington DC Hotel earned and ISO 50001 certificate, which verifies that the hotel has implemented an energy management system, and that the normalized energy performance at the 1331 Pennsylvania Ave, NW location improved over the baseline.

Implementing ISO 50001 increased employee awareness of energy issues, encouraged behavioral changes to support energy management and helped the hotel develop achievable energy performance targets, according to the director of engineering at the Marriott hotel.
