DOE Announces Release of Updated, Interactive CHP Database

by | Jul 20, 2017

The The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Advanced Manufacturing Office announced the release of an updated database that contains a comprehensive listing of combined heat and power (CHP) installations throughout the country.

The updated version of the Combined Heat and Power Installation Database contains a comprehensive listing of combined heat and power installations throughout the country.

According to energy.gov:

  • This new release of the Combined Heat and Power Installation Database reflects an increase in the overall U.S. CHP capacity, from 81.1 GW in 2015 to 82.6 GW in 2016.
  • The number of CHP sites grew from 4,309 to 4,395 in 2016. This growth was fueled by the 173 new CHP installations that were entered into the database in 2016.
  • These installations were spread throughout the U.S., with new systems in 34 states and the District of Columbia. The states with the newest CHP installations were New York (39), Massachusetts (27), California (19), and Pennsylvania (11).

The interactive database says CHP installations in Manhattan alone accounted for 19 of the 39, with most installations taking place in schools and multi-family residential buildings. And in Texas, the CHP installation at the Deer Park Energy Center has a capacity of 1.2 million KW, making it one of the largest in the nation.

Boston made headlines in April when city officials announced the Boston Medical Center went live with a $15 million, 2 MW CHP installation that is expected to save the hospital $1.5 million annually on energy costs.

And in Massachusetts, MGM Springfield, a new resort and casino, announced in March that it would install CHP units in an effort to save between $300,000 and $400,000 annually in energy costs.
