Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), which provides electric service to a population of 1.4 million Californians, announced on January 30 that the company had partnered with GridPoint to deliver a new energy management solutions (EMS) program to small and medium-size commercial customers.
SMUD customers that implement the program will gain automated management of their energy consumption through on-site hardware, cloud-based tools, and analytics – enabling them to control HVAC and lighting schedules, and to troubleshoot equipment issues remotely. The platform collects and displays data in real-time, providing utility customers with insights into their energy patterns that they can use to adapt operations to maximize savings, GridPoint said.
The technology accommodates a majority of commercial buildings, requires no capital outlay from the customer, and will be managed and serviced by GridPoint. Energy savings typically exceed the monthly program fee, so customers are cash-flow positive from day one.
“We want to help our small and mid-size commercial customers take control of their energy use,” said SMUD Chief Customer Officer Nicole Howard. “By working with GridPoint on this customized energy management solution, we’ll be able to provide an affordable, effective set of tools to small and medium-size businesses that can deliver the savings large commercial and industrial users have realized for years.”
“With the energy landscape rapidly evolving, utilities are looking for ways to improve customer care, drive energy efficiency, and bring technology to the edge of the grid,” said GridPoint’s VP of Channel Sales Jason Narod. “SMUD is an innovative leader and we are excited to partner with them and deliver value to commercial users.”
Last June, GridPoint won the Top Product of the Year Award from Environmental Leader, the sister publication of Environmental Manager, at the Environmental Leader Conference awards ceremony in Denver. The Environmental Leader Product & Project Awards is a program recognizing excellence in products and services that provide companies with energy and environmental benefits, or in projects implemented by companies that improved environmental or energy management and increased the bottom line.
