A key step has been taken toward constructing a net zero energy (NZE) building on the Bethlehem Steel site in Lackawanna, NY: The Erie County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has hired Turner Construction to provide design and construction management services.

The Buffalo News says that the building would use geothermal energy, solar panels, wind turbines and architectural features aimed at lowering energy use. Preliminary work has been budgeted by the IDA at $1.5 million. Spending of an additional $2.7 million has been approved for purchase of the land.

The building will have 76,280 square feet of leasable space. Two-thirds will be dedicated to light manufacturing and one-third for office space. It will cost $25 million to $30 million to build, the story says.

NZE buildings are becoming a common goal. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) has awarded a 23-year, $170 million energy savings performance contract (ESPC) to Exelon subsidiary Constellation for work at the Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) in Albany, GA. The base will become net-zero.
