Amazon Web Services said this week that its data centers will run on 50 percent renewable energy by the end of next year, according to GeekWire.
The announcement was made at the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas by Distinguished Engineer James Hamilton. The portion that will come from renewables is five percent more than what was promised for this year and half-again as much as the promise for the end of 2015. Eventually, the story says, the company hopes to run on 100 percent renewable energy.
Hamilton, according to the report, said that customers can opt to have their data stored at the Oregon facility, which runs on 100 percent renewable energy.
Limiting energy use is one of the key goals Amazon and other companies face. Cooling servers and other equipment is a key. Liquid immersion cooling is emerging as a key technology in this effort.
