Washington, DC, has adopted the Renewable Portfolio Standard Expansion Act of 2016. The act, according to the press release, will lead to the provisioning of solar power to 100,000 low-income households by 2032. This will lead to a 50 percent reduction in energy bills in those homes.
Sustainable DC aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by half and lead to the use of renewable energy for half of DC’s energy needs by 2032, the press release said.
The city also is partnering to launch GZEP Solar Plus in partnership with the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. The goal is to provide paid training in solar panel installation, energy efficiency and construction skills to people between 18 and 24 years of age.
Late last year, the D.C. Department of General Services said that it would increase solar capacity in the city by 70 percent by installing solar panels on 34 facilities.
