Silver Spring Introduces Starfish

Silver Spring Networks introduced Starfish, an IPv6-based network service that will use the Internet of Things (IoT) to link commercial enterprises, cities, utilities and other entities across what it says will be reliable, secure and scalable networks. Energy services and distribution will be controlled by the network.

Starfish – which will build on the 22 million connected devices that Silver Spring has in the field already – is based on IEEE 802.15.4g, a wireless interoperability standard also known as Wi-SUN. Wi-SUN offers speeds as fast as 1.2 Megabits per second (Mbps), 10 millisecond latency and has a point-to-point range of 50 miles. The network will first be available in Chicago, San Antonio, San Jose, Bristol (England), Copenhagen, Glasgow and Kolkata India.

The high level of automation and decentralized control provided by the IoT and mobility are impacting energy management in a number of ways, including how HVAC services are provided.
