San Diego: All Renewable Energy Sources by 2020

San Diego, the eighth largest city in the United States, will use 100 percent renewable energy by 2020, according to The New York Times.

The vote in the city council was unanimous. It is the first large city to make the pledge legally binding, according to the story. The path to all-renewable energy may include shifting control of some power management tasks from the city to local utilities, to field a fleet in which half of vehicle run on renewables and recycling 98 percent of methane produced by sewage and water treatment plants. The ordinance also commits to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2035, the story says.

Last month, Las Vegas said that it will expand its partnership with NV Energy in an effort to move to 100 percent renewable energy sources, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
