Las Cruces, NM, early next year will begin a $5.5 million project to replace as many as 3,000 street lights and interior florescent lights with LEDs and install solar energy at five city facilities, according to the Sun-News.
The story says that the city hopes to save 50 percent in energy via the street light change-out, though it doesn’t include the majority of the more than 8,000 streetlights operated by the city. The cost of the switch will be $1.5 million. Indoor lighting will be changed at as many as 16 facilities and cost about $150,000. It could save as much as 35 percent in energy costs.
The story says that the city has entered into a $1 million agreement with the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department to use their consulting services to map out long term energy savings.
South Sioux City, NE, expects to save about $40,000 annually by using bioenergy. Green Star Gasifiers are supplying the bioenergy unit under a grant of $216,000 from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and $50,000 from the city. The news was reported by KTIV.
