Unity College Expands with Energy Efficient Buildings

Unity College — in the Maine town of the same name – announced a $6 million expansion of the campus. The project includes construction of two energy-efficient buildings, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The project features construction of a 74-bed residence hall and new academic building, both of which are expected to be completed by the 2016-2017 school year.

The residence hall – which will house incoming freshmen — will  be heated and cooled by air-source pumps, according to the story. During the past three years, the school has spent $14.4 million to create 60,000 square feet of new residence and academic building space.

Unity College was cited by Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The school says that the energy subcategory in which it was recognized focuses on institutions that reduce energy consumption through conservation and efficiency.
