Alabama Builders Exceeding Requirements

Even though they have not officially taken effect, some builders in Alabama already are exceeding new energy codes. Those codes – which the story at the Dothan Eagle says require one more step to become mandatory – will make residential energy requirements 30 percent more efficient than The 2006 International Energy Conservation Code.

The new rules are being finalized by The Alabama Energy and Residential Codes Board. The builders are following the new rules because they lead to savings and other advantages.  Some codes requirements are more efficient documentation, the use of Low E glass, mass wall exterior insulation, duct sealing for air handlers, removal of cavities such as supply ducts and blower doors to test air infiltration, the story says.

Benefits from following the new rules – whether or not they are official – are lower power bills, tax deductions, more comfortable homes and better resale values. It is unclear when the new rules officially will be adopted.

AL.com reported earlier this month that the Alabama Public Service Commission voted 3-0 to allow Alabama Power to create 500 MW of renewable energy in the state during the next six years. Businesses and the military will be the main recipients of the additional energy.
