Monsanto says it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its crop protection operations by 22 percent (per pound of active ingredient) by 2020.
The agribusiness giant announced its new GHG target yesterday as it released its 2014 sustainability report.
The company’s crop protection operations include its work as part of the BioAg Alliance as well as its pesticides including Roundup. Monsanto says this business segment is the largest contributor to the company’s carbon footprint.
Also in the report, Monsanta pledges to increase irrigation water application efficiency across its global seed production process — including both its owned and leased operations, as well as the contract farms that grow seed for the company’s products — by 25 percent by 2020. At press time, Monsanto did not provide a baseline year for this water efficiency goal.
