AEG Power Solutions, Spanish utility Iberdola and innovation foundation Tecnalia have jointly developed a prototype battery energy storage station.
The prototype includes a wireless battery management system, storage converter and local monitoring unit that will be field-tested for the first time.
The project, called SAGER, includes the design, installation, integration and validation of a new type of energy storage station through large batteries. The 1 million EUR project ($1.2 million) is in response to the growing challenges of integrating renewable energy sources onto the public grid. The battery storage systems in the megawatt range are being used to cope with these challenges, according to AEG.
The SAGER station will be connected to the grid and store energy during low demand time and inject the power to the grid at peak demand. The station will allow the utility to monitor the grid load closely and integrate locally generated wind power at a low cost.
