EBay Dumps ALEC

by | Dec 19, 2014

EBay, after months of pressure from climate change activists, yesterday confirmed its departure from the American Legislative Exchange Council, according to Forecast the Facts.

Forecast the Facts and other environmental groups had been pressuring eBay to cut its ties to ALEC, a coalition of corporations and state legislators that opposes environmental regulations and clean energy policies.

The move followed a recent exodus of tech companies, including Facebook, which dumped ALEC in late September, along with Google, which cut its support to ALEC saying the group was “literally lying” about climate change. Microsoft cut ties and all financial support to ALEC in September for the same reasons.

Outgoing eBAy CEO John Donahoe, when questioned by Brant Olson, campaign director at Forecast the Facts, said “we are only with them [ALEC] on one issue: internet,” and “we are not with them,” on climate change, according to Forecast the Facts.

The group says it’s now looking to pressure AT&T, Verizon, FedEx and UPS to follow suit and dump ALEC.
