Will More Companies Ban Controversial Antibacterial Chemical?

antibacterial soapUnilever, Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson are among the companies that have either limited the use of triclosan — a commonly used anti-bacterial ingredient — in their products or announced plans to phase it out completely.

And more personal care product manufacturers will likely follow suit now that Minnesota has banned the chemical, The Guardian reports.

While all three companies maintain that triclosan is safe for humans, some studies suggest the chemical is now found throughout the environment in including water and soil, according to the newspaper.

In April, Avon said it will phase out triclosan from its cosmetic and personal care products, despite scientific evidence that “supports the safe use of triclosan.”

Avon said it made the decision based on consumer pressure to drop the chemical.
