Well Building InstituteThe Green Building Certification Institute will provide third-party certification for the WELL Building Standard, under a collaboration with the International WELL Building Institute.

The collaboration will create a seamless WELL Building Standard experience for professionals and organizations already using LEED, the IWBI said, making it easier for LEED users to incorporate health and wellness in their work.

IWBI says it also expects to work closely with GBCI to align WELL professional education programs and accreditation with LEED AP requirements.

The IWBI describes the WELL Building Standard as an evidence-based standard created through six years of research and development. Creator Delos wrote the standards in collaboration with physicians from leading medical institutions and expert practitioners from the building industry.

Currently in pilot phase, the WELL Building Standard sets performance requirements in seven categories: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind. It applies to commercial, residential, and institutional projects.

CBRE Group received the world’s first WELL Building certification for a commercial office space, for the company’s global headquarters in Los Angeles. The facility features energy absorbing flooring, UV air sanitizers, biophilic air treatment, water filtration systems and anti-microbial coatings on all surfaces.

The William Jefferson Clinton Children’s Center in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is another WELL pilot project.
