Cisco is trying to draw attention to the fact that power is wasted from myriad devices, and Tom Noonan, general manager of Cisco’s EnergyWise Suite, highlights some electricity-using machines that aren’t commonly on energy managers’ radar.
ATMs are huge energy wasters because they’re typically powered on 24-7 but only used for about 8.4 minutes per hour, writes Noonan for Gigaom.
Noonan says a European bank determined that nearly 50 percent of its 58,000 ATMs were in locations such as shopping malls, which aren’t open 24-7, and the bank turned the power down on those ATMs, saving $19 million per year.
Vending machines are similar to ATMs in that they are often located in places that aren’t open constantly. For example, vending machines in stadiums could be turned down when the stadium is closed, keeping food and beverages as cool as necessary, and then powered up several hours before a game to deliver cold drinks.
