CH2M Hill is the top US environmental firm, according to Engineering News-Record’s Top 200 Environmental Firms list. The global consulting, design, construction and operations firm has held the No. 1 spot on ENR’s annual list since 2006.
The No. 2 and No. 3 companies, URS and Veolia Environment North America, respectively, maintained their 2012 positions on the list as well. Tetra Tech, Bechtel, Energy Solutions, AECOM Technology, MWH Global, Golder Associates and Clean Harbors round out the top 10.
ENR says in 2013, global market forces caught up with leading environmental companies, with total revenue in the surveyed categories unable to sustain the 5 percent gain that last year’s firms reported. However, with the $51.7 billion in revenue reported for 2012, off 4.5 percent from last year’s total, still exceeds 2011’s $51.3 billion revenue total.
While revenues were down for many of the Top 200, CH2M Hill grew its total to about $4.3 billion, up about 5 percent from last year, ENR says. Also, the company’s environmental revenue outside the US increased to 42 percent of the overall numbers.
Earlier this month CH2M Hill won a three-year master services agreement to support BP’s environmental efforts outside of North America in the areas of remediation, environmental compliance assurance and auditing, modeling, environmental permitting, waste management, water and wastewater management, impact assessment, environmental due diligence and mergers and acquisitions support, natural resource management, social and sustainability reporting and environmental project oversight. The companies did not announce the contract value.
The firm’s other recent environmental contract wins include $80 million with the Environment Agency (England and Wales) for Water and Environmental Management Framework to provide planning, modeling, environmental and design services in flood and coastal erosion risk management, and $75 million for the US Navy Atlantic Natural Resources Services, which provides the Navy with resources management, compliance and related environmental planning services.
CH2M Hill, along with Deloitte, Ernst & Young, ERM, KPMG, McKinsey, PE International and PwC, stand out as the leading sustainability consulting firms, according to a May report from independent analyst firm Verdantix.
