FM Conway Improves Production 50% With Water Recycling System

FM Conway, an infrastructure services company and processor of sand, aggregates and recycled materials, was able to increase production by 50 percent and improve reliability after adding a water treatment system developed by CDEnviro, according to the supplier.

CDEnviro’s turn-key centrifuge system, which has resulted in an overall reduction in flocculent of 33 percent per ton of dry solids processed, was integrated within the existing site in east London, UK. The centrifuge produces clean water, which is then reused in the washing process. The CDEnviro system also has been able to harvest rainwater around the centrifuge, reducing fresh water requirements and keeping the surrounding area dry.

FM Conway approached CDEnviro because its belt press system was unreliable and affected the entire washing and recycling process, which increased the amount of production downtime. The centrifuge developed by CDEnviro can work with thickened sludge or thin wastewater effluents to supply the upstream washing process with solids-free washing water.

FM Conway continues to invest in technologies and facilities that allow it to recycle almost all of its waste materials in-house. The company is able to recycle more than 95 percent of highway arisings into new aggregates and recycle 100 percent of road planings, which are used in the production of low carbon asphalt.

Each year, more than 200,000 metric tons of construction waste is recovered at FM Conway’s east London facility and is then reused as aggregate., which saves natural resources and diverts waste from landfills.

This week Pepsi won the Stockholm Industry Water Award for conservation efforts that included water recycling and re-use, helping it to improve global water efficiency by over 20 percent since 2006.

And chicken producer Perdue has found that screening and chlorination allow it to re-use water from bird washing, saving about 360 gallons of water per minute.
