The Hertz Corporation has completed a 229 kW solar system at its global headquarters building in Park Ridge, NJ, and announced plans to build 11 additional installations totaling 2.2 MW.
Martifer Solar USA designed and installed the photovoltaic system at the Hertz headquarters, expected to produce more than 300,000 kWh of solar energy on an annual basis. It’s one of more than 15 PV systems Martifer Solar has installed at Hertz facilities nationwide.
Hertz expects the 900-panel array to prevent more than 9 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in its lifetime.
In addition to the Park Ridge solar array, Hertz says it will build two solar systems at Newark International Airport (396.24 kW) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (318.24 kW). Combined, the airport locations will generate more than 800,000 kWh of renewable energy and save 641 tons of carbon emissions annually, the company said.
Also in 2012, Hertz says it will complete solar systems in: Augusta, Ga. (70 kW); Denver, Colo. (264.96 kW); Los Angeles International Airport (516.53 kW); Aviation Boulevard, Los Angeles, Calif. (61.33 kW); Macon, Ga. (65.80 kW); Newark, NJ (198.58 kW); New York City (177.66 kW); Gerard Street, Boston (73.32 kW); and McClellan Highway, Boston (64.15 kW).
By 2011, Hertz had installed solar systems at seven car and equipment rental locations, including a 235 kW system at the Denver airport (pictured). In total, Hertz says it will produce more than 3.1 million kilowatt hours of solar PV energy at Hertz locations across the United States, saving 2,138 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Hertz has also joined the EPA’s Green Power Partnership, and its sustainability initiatives include providing alternative-fuel and fuel-efficient vehicles to customers, reducing waste, energy management programs and resource conservation.
In a pilot program for Hertz Corporation’s CNG airport rentals program, the company began renting eight CNG Honda Civics and two CNG GMC Yukons at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City in May.
Earlier this year Hertz on Demand and Move About, an electric vehicle sharing company, launched EV sharing services for corporations, utilities and municipalities in Germany.
