100 Best Corporate Citizens Revealed

Bristol-Myers Squibb is ranked no. 1 on the list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens 2012 from CR Magazine, followed by IBM, Microsoft, Intel and Johnson Controls.

Bristol-Meyers Squibb moved to the top from the fourth position on last year’s ranking; IBM improved from its third place ranking, and Johnson Controls slipped from the top slot down four positions to fifth this year.

Campbell Soup and Mattel, the other top five companies in 2011, moved down to eighth and twelfth overall, according the ranking.

CR Magazine analyzes seven categories for the rankings – environment, climate change, employee relations, human rights, governance, finance, and philanthropy – and considers 320 elements.

The magazine ranked IBM as the best company in the environment category, followed by Johnson Controls, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and EMC Corp.

But the top five overall best companies did not score as well in the climate change category, moving to double-digit positions, except for IBM’s sixth place ranking. Intel, for example, was ranked 83rd.

The top-ranked company for climate change efforts was UPS, which was ranked 48th overall, followed by Spectra Energy (7th), PG&E (38th), Coca-Cola (14th) and Eaton Corp. (17th).

CR Magazine says that for the climate change category, companies are reviewed for 69 data elements, which contribute 16.5 percent of the total. The environmental category contributes another 19.5 percent of total, making these categories relevant for about one third of the percentage points valued in the total weighted average score.

Allergan and Exxon Mobil are holding “red cards” on this year’s list, removed for misbranding Botox in the case of Allergan, and being held liable for contaminating groundwater in New York City in the case of Exxon Mobil, CR Magazine said.

The report analyzes public data on the companies collected from sources including websites, sustainability reports, the Toxic Release Inventory, the Emergency Response Notification Systems, and the EPA EnviroFacts data set.

It also uses resources like Governance Metrics International, Morningstar, the Carbon Disclosure Project, and The Foundation Center. Third party financial analysis firm IW Financial, based in Portland, Maine, conducts the review of the data, CR Magazine said.
