Software company 1E has been contracted by in-flight services provider LSG Sky Chefs to increase the efficiency of its PCs.
LSG, which belongs to Lufthansa’s catering division, will run 1E’s NightWatchman Enterprise power management software on its computers following a test on a small subset of LSG PCs.
Based on the pilot project, powering down the corporate PCs during non–work hours is expected to save LSG Sky Chefs approximately €70,000 ($91,000) per year. This should save almost 400,000 kWh of electricity, and roughly 300 metric tons of CO2, LSG says.
Some 800 of the company’s computers remain on all the time and will not be using the software.
To date, 1E says it has helped more than 1,600 customers make €1.1 billion in efficiency savings. This includes €620m in energy costs alone and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 5.8 million metric tons, the company says. In a recent report entitled Selecting a PC Power Management Solution Vendor from independent analyst firm Ovum, 1E ranks as the reporting leader, the company says.
In April, Robert Monine, director of federal programs at 1E, wrote a column for Environmental Leader, arguing that many management often concentrates on the efficiencies in all other parts of a data center while ignoring “the humble server.”
