Ecologix Environmental Systems, an Atlanta-based wastewater treatment company specializing in the oil and gas industry, has designed a mobile integrated treatment system for hydraulic fracturing that allows the re-use of water for future drilling.
Using dissolved air flotation technology, the system can treat up to 900 gallons per minute of frac flowback water. The sped up water treatment reduces the burden on equipment and logistics required when using traditional treatment methods, and could significantly reduce operational costs, Ecologix says.
The company has called efficient and affordable water treatment “one of the biggest operational challenges” facing the hydro-fracking industry.
In other oil and gas industry news, IBM researchers, developers and a team from IBM’s Centre of Excellence for Oil and Gas in Stavanger, Norway, are collaborating with experts from Statoil, Kongsberg Group and Det Norske Veritas on developing a system to enable real-time monitoring of environmental data, and early detection of – and response to – operational events surrounding offshore oil and gas installations.
The system is intended to be able to move beyond simply monitoring, to predicting and preventing issues before they occur, helping companies minimize the environmental risk associated with subsea oil and gas operations, IBM says.
