IHS Makes Sustainability a ‘Measure of Success’

IHS says it has established a corporate sustainability goal that will join the company’s four other long-standing goals by which it focuses its efforts and measures its success.

The analysis and software company did not define the sustainability goal, except to say that progress will be measured using the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. The DJSI selects sustainability leaders from all industry sectors on the basis of criteria from the Sustainable Asset Management corporate sustainability assessment.

The company’s other goals are to improve “Customer Delight,” foster a culture that enables colleague success, deliver profitable top- and bottom-line growth, and provide an opportunity for shareholder success relative to the company’s peer group.

IHS says that in 2011 it defined a company vision of being world-class in corporate sustainability by 2015. To achieve this vision, the company will focus on improving its public reporting, providing greater insight regarding environmental and social dimensions; increase its focus on metrics, tracking and goal setting on operational eco-efficiency; continue its commitment to and support of citizenship and philanthropy; and continue its corporate governance focus.

The company launched its corporate sustainability function last year.

IHS also helps clients develop and implement strategies for corporate responsibility, enterprise sustainability management, greenhouse gas and energy management, product stewardship, and environment, health and safety. A report by efficiency system provider Groom Energy Solutions named IHS as one of ten leaders in enterprise energy and carbon accounting software for 2010, and in November 2010 Verdantix ranked IHS as one of ten leaders in the carbon and energy software market.

Last September IHS launched a product that automates the preparation of data for submission via the Environmental Protection Agency’s electronic Greenhouse Gas Reporting Tool.

And in June Duke Energy chose IHS Essential Suite to help it perform 250 hourly checks for potential compliance deviations, each with automatic notifications. Duke is managing over a million individual chemical records and 600 waste profiles with the Environmental, Health and Safety system, which replaced over 60 legacy systems.
