Tainted Teddy: Target Yanks Valentine’s Day Bears Over Lead Concerns

Leady teddyTarget has agreed to stop selling its Valentine’s Day Message Bears after concerns were raised about high levels of lead.

The Center for Environmental Health tested a neon pink stuff bear sold by Target and found lead levels eight times higher than federal limits for products geared to children 12 and under, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The California Attorney General and the Center for Environmental Health raised vigorous protests, resulting in Target’s decision to pull the bears.

A Target spokesperson told the AP that the bears “had compliant testing results” when they were shipped from China.

“We applaud the Attorney General for sending Target a Valentine’s Day message the company won’t forget,” said Caroline Cox, Research Director for CEH, in a press release.
