The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering and Support Center, in Huntsville, Ala., has awarded the Shaw Group a five-year worldwide environmental remediation services contract to clean-up Department of Defense sites around the world. As part of the contract, Shaw will provide several services including munitions removal, environmental compliance and remediation.
Over the past year, the federal government awarded Shaw more than $100 million in munitions work, which included projects ranging from site assessments and investigation to full-scale removal and destruction.
To date, Shaw has completed more than 2,000 munitions-related response projects, including unexploded ordnance, discarded military munitions and munitions constituents. The company has treated or disposed of more than 4.3 million tons of contaminated soil/debris and more than 56 million gallons of contaminated water and liquid.
Shaw says one project saved $135 million by using innovative remediation technologies.
In the commercial sector, a white paper is available on sustainable remediation that provides businesses with better ways of restoring contaminated sites.
