Cub Foods opened its first “green” grocery store in Minnesota. The 62,900 square-foot store is currently seeking LEED Gold Certification.
The store features 44 skylights that will illuminate 75 percent of the store using a solar powered GPS system which tracks and redirects sunlight as needed. The company says the “green” store expects a 35 percent lighting cost savings compared to typical Cub stores.
The grocery’s parking lot will be illuminated using only LED lights, which is expected to provide 50 percent energy savings. The new grocery also features a landscape irrigation system, which the company says uses 50 percent less water than typical systems. In addition, the company says 75 percent of the building construction waste will be recycled.
