David Perry, director of business strategy for Cognito writes in Financial Times that “IT’s potential to help reduce fleet emissions is often overlooked.”
Perry says expanding simple consumer-level devices such as GPS systems and cell phones, which are already being used to co-ordinate mobile workers and improve emissions, is easier and cheaper than vehicle modification or replacement.
Fleet emissions can be dramatically reduced by using a combination of tracking and telematics in the vehicle, along with office-based scheduling and reporting systems, according to Perry.
Perry writes that dynamic scheduling systems, programed with a complete set of rules and assets, produce more efficient routes than human planners.
According to Perry, the integration of live data from navigation and tracking systems or vehicle telematics, can refine real-time schedules, ensure that they are as efficient as possible and can be easily adapted to deal with emergencies.
