deloitte.jpgAccording to Larry Quinlan, CIO at Deloitte LLP, green IT makes operations streamlined, efficient, and cost-effective. He recently spoke with Network World about the company’s green IT initiatives. Of all the green programs Deloitte implemented, Quinlan says server consolidation gave the company the most bang for its buck.

Deloitte’s green initiatives also include:
— Using larger, more effective, and centralized printers that cost less per page, reducing electricity usage and cutting down on the umber of devices that need to be managed.
— Reducing the number of file servers by at least 20 percent at its new data center in Dallas.
— Reducing backup tapes and partnering with companies to deal with Deloitte’s e-waste.
— Launching a PDA recycling program which will soon require employees to bring in their old PDA to get a new one.
— Setting up wireless everywhere to reduce power consumption – less ethernet switches. Deloitte is also aiming to reduce the amount of cable in new locations and renovations by 50 percent.
— Investing in videoconferencing to reduce business trips.

According to a March report released by Forrester, green IT services will peak at $4.8 billion in 2013.
