alcoa_logo.jpgAlcoa reached an agreement with Chelan PUD on Monday, on a new hydropower contract to supply its Wenatchee, Washington aluminum smelter through 2028.

The new contract begins when the existing one expires in 2011 and will provide enough energy to enable the start-up of a third potline at the smelter in 2012.

The 17-year contract will provide incremental power for increased production of 42,000 metric tons annually to the Wenatchee smelter, brining in 60 to 80 new jobs to the region.

Alcoa now has around 75 percent of its smelting production under long-term, competitive power supply. Twenty-five percent of the company’s smelting production is supplied through self-generated power.
