Railroad companies are beginning to test new ultra-low emission engines and Union Pacific Corp.’s website touts the company’s “cleaner and greener” fleet of locomotives, stating that if 25 percent of truck freight was diverted to rail, there would be “nearly 800,000 fewer tons of air pollution” by 2025.
Norfolk Southern’s latest ads, which show a family of gas cans watching a train passes by, will air roughly 400 times during the fall election season, the company said.
According to a new report from the Brookings Institution, rail transit plays an important role in determining carbon emissions and dense metro areas such as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco stand out for having the smallest transportation and residential footprints.
