Companies can reduce their carbon footprint by replacing fossil fuel ingredients with bio-based materials, Steen Riisgaard, CEO of Novozymes, told UPI.
Bio-based materials offer more than a potential for low-emission fuels. More companies are using bio-based products as raw materials for textiles, plastics and cleaning solutions, he said.
With climate-change legislation pending around the world, Novozymes, which produces enzymes used in the conversion of biomass into ethanol, sees future emissions reduction mandates as an opportunity.
Last year the company produced 200,000 tons of enzymes, leading to 20 million tons in CO2 emissions reductions, according to company data.
Novozymes recently was on Corporate Knights’ and Innovest Strategic Value Advisors’ fourth annual list of the 100 most sustainable corporations in the world.
