london2.jpgBritain has implemented its first low-emission zone in London, and it will cost some truckers $295 to drive into it. The scheme will charge only trucks weighing more than 12 tons and failing to meet EU emissions standards, but over the next two years it will also affect smaller vehicles such as buses, vans and minibuses.

Backers of the plan claim it will cut harmful emissions 16 percent by 2012 and will reduce health-care bills by 250 million pounds. Transport for London says half of all buses and two-thirds of trucks will not be affected, but some suggest as many as 10,000 vehicles will have to pay.

Toll agencies around the world have implemented discounts for eco-friendly cars.
