Safeway says it will be the first major retailer to make its entire fleet of trucks operate on biodiesel fuels. The announcement will be made at its Dublin, California, store which is powered by solar energy. Safeway plans to power 23 stores with solar panels.
Safeway operates over one thousand large trucks, and this conversion to biodiesel will reduce 75 million CO2 emissions annually. Just last year it converted all of the trucks in its Arizona fleet. The company uses B20 Biodiesel, which is a combination of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.
Last year, Safeway was the first retailer to join the California Climate Action Registry.
