Google unveiled how it will spend $175 million in philanthropy over the next three years, reports the New York Times, and a large portion is headed towards environmental initiatives. DotOrg, as the philanthropy is called, has invested $10 million in eSolar, a California company that specializes in solar power, and is also providing grants to accelerate the commercialization of plug-in vehicles. This was first announced back in November.
The $175 million was broken down into four initiatives, which include refurbishing the middle class in Africa and South Asia and helping the governments of developing nations provide information to its people. The fourth initiative is devoted to the development of renewable energy sources that are cheaper and cleaner than coal.
Last spring, Google announced its intention to be carbon neutral by this year. It has also launched a site to track its energy initiatives.
